Summer isn’t over yet but the back to school ads are on and we have to turn our minds already to our Autumn schedule.  Although we are open for schools all year long , indeed we have some of our fave schools such as Loretto on the Green and Dundalk grammar to name but 2 – but we also will have the start of our training programs.

The first of these is our Outdoor Instructor Training Course and starts on October 1st -This is particularly suitable for those who have just left school / university or are  taking gap years, those who are currently employed or have recently finished working or are otherwise inelligible for a FÁS course.

Here’s a brief (if a little formal outline of the course)
The Outdoor Instructor Course OITC is a training course for candidates who wish to become instructors working in the area of surfing and other beach activities.

The OITC course

The OITC course

This course concentrates mainly on training for the
ISA level 1 surf coach award, the RLSS Beach Lifeguard award, and over the ten weeks candidates will also train in child protection, adventure (land-based) activities, leadership skills, team training and development and beach first aid skills. Candidates are expected to attend Monday-Friday for the duration of the course.
Candidates must be able to swim. Candidates do NOT have to be able to surf, as you will be taught the skills of surfing if required. Surfing and swimming training are major parts of this course, and you can expect to be in the water every day. Students are expected to be (or get) fit through training every day. Training will include water-based (Swim & surf) and land based activities (running, circuit

training etc.)
Candidates will also do basic training in low ropes, climb & abseil and high ropes instruction . Candidates will also participate and learn to skills of conducting team-training activities and land-based activities. Candidates
will do child protection training, and Beach first aid. The fees for the course are 950 euro.

After a very succesful pilot year we hope to run a second year of our FÁS Surf instructor and Beach Lifeguard course.  We will know more about this in a few weeks when FÁS confirm their decisions and we will put a post up about it.

Feel free to contact us about any of these courses on 0719842418 or emailing info@donegaladventurecentre.net

The Easter eggs we're hoping for

The Easter eggs we're hoping for

Happy Easter. I hope you are somewhere close to waves and sunny weather: we are basking in glorious conditions here in Bundoran, how nice it is to have perfect holiday weather!

Ok- a few things to tell you about, and if you’re interested in celebrity, perhaps this may be your lucky day! First of all, we were contacted by a lady named Arlene Mc Cann, who is casting for a surf commercial. She is looking for ‘groups of friends who love to surf together in their spare time. It doesn’t matter about surfing abilities, we’re looking for people with a passion for surfing that dedicate their weekends and holidays to it.’ If you are interested in contacting her, the email is arlene.mc@gmail.com

Secondly, we were contacted by the makers of the ‘Mission Beach’ TV programme.here are the details:

Outgoing and ambitious 16 year olds to be put through their paces at one of the world’s best Junior Lifeguarding Programme in Florida. You’ll be living together and supporting each other for the whole three to four weeks of this amazing course. From eight mile ocean swims to 40ft pier jumps, emergency CPR training to four day hiking missions, training alongside hundreds of American teens and real working lifeguards, this life changing experience is not for the faint hearted. If you don’t have the drive and endurance to challenge yourself, both physically and mentally, then this isn’t for you. But if you’re ready to be plunged in at the deep end and want to embark on an adventure that you’ll never forget, then get ready for the most exciting summer of your life. If You’re ready for the challenge then email beach@rival-media.com

Ok, thirdly, a consultancy group has been hired to study the needs of surfers in the Bundoran area. They are looking to send a questionnaire to those who use Bundoran occasionally or regularly for surfing. I do not want to bombard you all with this stuff, but if you are willing to take the questionnaire, please email me back, and I will send it to you then. It would be great to get some help on this, as they are working for Bundoran Tourism to decide how best to improve the services and infrastructure of the town to facilitate surfing and tourism, so your imput would be very helpful.Email info@donegaladventurecentre.net and I will forward it.

Now: that’s all the foreign affairs dealt with, here’s the domestic news. Good Friday is a big day for us, it’s kind of the official start of the Summer Season, and the town is buzzing, the tourist office is open, and the restaurants are happy to take in the normal pub-going clientele! We are kicking off our Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, and on Monday, we start our Easter Beach Lifeguard Course. We have camp for kids and teens all next week, plus family activities and plenty of stuff to do. We have family rooms, dorms and private rooms in the newly renovated and friendly Homefield Rock Hostel, and it’s not too late to give us a call and thrash out a great deal for a few away-days. There’s live music all over town, and (and I love saying this) there will be surf and sunshine! So if you’re thinking about it, ring Collie at 07198 29357 or you can email me here.

Also, if you are on facebook, we have a page, every growing in popularity, but we would like as many friends as we can get, we’re facebook.com/dacsurf and we tweet @dacsurf
And if you’re organizing anything: a hen, stag, sports getaway, romantic break, family holiday: please do give us a call and ask us what we can put together. We have great full-board deals here, we can book activities, great meal options with la sabbia restaurant, and we’ll do it with a smile and find you the best prices, so do check with us.

And if we don’t see you this weekend, see you soon! And enjoy yourself, and hope you get plenty of eggs! 😀
Best wishes for now from Niamh & all the Donegal Adventure Centre crew

On December 28th, local surf-rock band INUENDO play The Chasin’ Bull – possibly my favourite band of all 🙂 So if you will have had enough of the family by then,  there is plenty of fun going on up here.
Hope all is well with you: remember, if you don’t wish to continue to receive updates from me, just send a ‘remove’ and I will. Re staff gossip, – Kyle cut his hair! It’s a big deal when a surf-king decides the time has come to ‘go short’, so promise to be gentle with him.
